CT Connections (CTC) have embarked on an innovative new program with Social Enterprise, PonyUp for Good, in a mission to leverage the residual value of used technology and turn it into fresh meals for people across Australia doing it tough. PonyUp were recently featured on ABC’s War on Waste and you can watch it here – War on Waste Video (4:10)
In the spirit of our philosophy to ensure Every Connection Counts, we recently cleared out some of our surplus IT equipment from our Melbourne office, which we donated to the team at PonyUp. In partnership with MRI E-Cycle Solutions, PonyUp will collect the decommissioned technology and provide department of defense data erasure, debadging, refurbishing and remarketing services, keeping it out of landfill and extending its valuable life.
PonyUp donates 50% of resale profits to their charity impact partner, SecondBite, Australia’s superheroes of fresh food rescue, who last year rescued and redistributed more than 19.4 million kilos of fresh produce to more than 1300 community programs around the country; enough fresh food to feed 104,000 people a day!
Any technology that cannot be remarketed is recycled by MRI E-Cycle Solutions. MRI are ISO 14001, AS/NZS 5377 and EPA accredited and their EPA licensed processes achieve up to 98% diversion from landfill. Their computer and television recycling program is a Commonwealth Government-approved Co-regulatory Arrangement under the National Television and Computer recycling scheme.
We look forward to sharing updates as the program progresses and we receive data on the weight of the technology we have diverted from landfill. The percentage is reused, and the number of meals we have been able to provide to people in need through our partnership with PonyUp.
CT Connections is proud to put our decommissioned technology to good use and ensure as much value is extracted from it as possible. It’s another way we deliver on our commitment to reduce our impact on the environment, give back to our communities and ensure Every Connection Counts.

DID YOU KNOW…..
CT Connections is partnering with Social Enterprise, PonyUp for Good to reuse and recycle our retired technology. Donated equipment will be data erased, refurbished and old-sold, extending the life of the technology by up to seven years. And the kicker: PonyUp donates 50% of profits to SecondBite, who last year rescued over 19.4 million kilos of fresh food, feeding over 104,000 people nationally every day. Following the collection, PonyUp will let us know the weight of the donation, how much of it was able to be reused and how many meals we have donated through the program.
More than 20 million tonnes of e-waste goes into landfill globally each year, leaching toxic chemicals into our soil and waterways. CT Connections is making sure to be a part of the solution by partnering with PonyUp for Good to reuse and recycle our decommissioned technology. So far PonyUp have collected more than 130,000 kilos of technology across Australia and used it to feed more than 290,000 people in need.
That 82% of the CO2 used across the lifespan of a desktop computer is produced during the manufacturing process, which is why it makes sense to reuse technology where we can and make the most of the resource investment. That’s why the EPA waste hierarchy is AVOID > REDUCE > REUSE > RECYCLE. By partnering with PonyUp for Good, our technology will have a new life, providing second hand technology to those not in a position to afford it new and reducing the need to manufacture new electronic devices, therefore saving precious natural resources.
More than $2 Billion worth of food goes into landfill each year while 2 million Australians go hungry. PonyUp for Good donates 50% of their profits to SecondBite who each year redistribute more than 11 Million kilos of fresh surplus food, donated by farmers, wholesalers, markets, supermarkets, caterers and events to more than 1300 community food programs on the frontline of food poverty around Australia.
PonyUp for Good will be providing data erasure services to CT Connections for any technology collected. PonyUp and MRI E-Cycle Solutions use the Blancco system of data erasure which is the gold standard and meets Department of Defense standards. This full service process, ensures any data on disposed computer assets is irreversibly destroyed and any equipment which does not successfully undertake the Blancco wiping process will be recycled with 98% diversion from landfill.
